
Kari Kapitan

It
is widely believed this curry
dish originated on board a ship. One evening, the captain of the
vessel asked the ship's cook what was for dinner. The cook
replied, "Chicken curry, captain!" However, the pronunciation of
the word "captain" by the cook sounded more like "kapitan". The
captain loved the dish and liked the name he heard: "Curry
Kapitan". Henceforth, the name was used for the dish whenever the
captain wanted the cook to prepare it.
Both the name and the popularity of the curry
spread rapidly in Melaka,
Malaysia.
It became a household name, particularly among the babas and
nyonyas.

Kari Ayam Kapitan

Ramai yang mempercayai bahawa hidangan kari
ini berasal dari atas sebuah kapal. Pada suatu petang,
nakhoda kapal bertanya tukang masak
apakah hidangan makan malam. "Kari Ayam, Kepten," jawab tukang
masak kapal. Akan tetapi, tukang masak tidak menyebut perkataan
kepten dengan begitu tepat. Rupanya, apa yang didengar oleh
nakhoda ialah "Kari Ayam Kapitan". Sejak itu, apabila nakhoda
kapal ingin makan hidangan kari
tersebut, dia akan menggunakan nama "Kari Ayam Kapitan".
Nama dan kepopularan hidangan kari
ini tersebar luas di Melaka,
Malaysia. Nama ini menjadi sebutan
ramai, terutamanya di kalangan kaum Baba dan Nyonya.
