QWERTYUIOP

QWERTYUIOP is a short story authored by Vivien Alcock. Here is a summary
of the story.
Lucy Beck is a seventeen-year-old girl
who has graduated from the Belmont Secretarial College. She wants to get
a job quite desperately as she is poor and in need of money. However,
being a slow typist, she has no confidence in herself. Fortunately, and
rather strangely for her, she is offered a job at Ross and Bannister's,
a small firm that owns a factory manufacturing cushions and duvets.
On her first day at
work, she encounters many peculiar incidents with the typewriter she is
using. The top line of letters on a typewriter- qwertyuiop - is
constantly repeated in her script although she does not type them.
Lucy is to later
discover that the spirit of a former secretary haunts the typewriter.
However, Lucy is determined to hold on to her position as the company's
secretary. She picks up the courage to communicate with the ghost using
the typewriter. In the end, she manages to convince the ghost to stop
bothering her as its services are required in another "place".
