The word "augment" means to add to or to enhance. Therefore, augmented reality is the technology that augments or adds to our view of the real world. The technology that enables this kind of reality to happen is to superimpose computer generated images to a user's view of the real world.

An example of a game that incorporates augmented technology is Pokemon Go. In the game, the player's real location and time is detected by her / his smartphone's GPS and clock. Added to, or "appearing in", this real world of the user are the virtual pocket monsters (Pokemons) that the user is tasked to catch.
